âWhatever it is, you donât want to know.â Beckett had brought them back to his campsite, a small hollow between two fallen trees, with a bit of canvas stretched over the top for shelter. âAnswering questions about the future is nothing but trouble.â
âWe can handle trouble,â Tipple said.
Beckett stared. âI didnât mean trouble for you. People donât like the answers, so who do you think they blame for their future mistakes and misfortunes?â
âItâs important,â said Rook.
âItâs always important.â Beckett sat on a log and began poking the ashes of an old fire. He blew on the embers until he roused a small flame, then fed it a handful of dried pine needles.
âAre you sure this place is safe?â asked Inga.
âFor three more days, yes. A bear was sleeping here before I came, and her scent is strong enough to scare off most threats.â
Rook gave a grunt that could have been a sound of approval. It was hard to tell with Rook.
Tipple sat down beside Beckett. âWhat can you tell us about Yog?â
âWhat part of âyou donât want to knowâ do you not understand?â
âForget the future,â said Inga. âTell us about the past. Is this truly Baya? If so, how did she survive for so long? Are the stories about her true?â
âAll stories are true.â Beckett dug out a jug from his small pile of belongings, took a drink, and offered it to Tipple. âBaya, eh? That makes sense. Given how many lives she devoured, itâs possible sheâs survived all these centuries.â
âDevoured?â Tipple repeated. âYou mean itâs true sheâll try to eat us?â
Beckett snickered. âMaybe she prefers her meat well pickled.â
âIf Yog is so powerful, why muck about with greencaps?â asked Tipple. âWhy waste her time on Grayrock?â
âDonât know.â Beckett took another drink.
Tipple dug through his things, producing two more bottles.
âWhere do you keep them all?â asked Inga.
âDonât ask.â He clapped Beckett on the back. âWhat say we refresh your memory?â
Half a bottle later, Tippleâs lingering headache had faded, swept aside by a warm, tingling sensation. âSo there I was in the outhouse. No sooner had I dropped my drawers when the damned greencap dropped on my ⦠on my â¦â
âOn his head,â said Inga.
âSâright! Tried to bite my ear clean off!â
âOnly you, Jeremiah Tipple.â Beckett laughed. âAnd donât think I donât know what youâre doing, trying to soften me up with drink!â
Tipple grinned. âCourse you do. Probably planned it this way to get me to bring you something worth drinking. What are you doing out here, anyway?â
âHiding.â Beckett pointed his bottle at Tipple. âThereâs a storm coming, and I donât want to be anywhere near when it hits.â
âSo give us some answers and let us stop it.â
Beckett leaned back and belched. âEveryone says they want to know their future. The âtruth,â whatever that means. They hassle and chase and pester you until you finally give it to them, and are they grateful? Never. Doesnât matter how kindly I phrase the news, either. âThe nice thing about being mauled to death by balverines is that it will be quick.
